名曲の残り方〜雨に唄えば

「雨に唄えば」といえば、アメリカのミュージカル映画の中でもトップをひた走っているという感じがする。映画がサイレントからトーキーへの転換期を扱った映画であるが、その中でジーン・ケリーが歌っているのが「雨に唄えば（Singing in the Rain）」である↓（こういう時、YouTubeは便利ですね）。

とても印象的な歌なので、映画をご覧になったことがない方でも、曲を聴かれたことがあるかもしれない。この映画は、亡くなった祖母が大好きな映画だった。やはりこの歌が大好きだったみたいだ。

この有名な歌であるが、この映画をDVDで見直したり（わたくしも大好きなので、繰り返しみている）する度に、ある曲のことをふと思い浮かべて、映画が終わった後に、その曲を聴くのが、この数年の流れになっている。

Dream Theaterの「Falling into Infinity」に収録されている「Take away my pain」である。

この出だしの、

のところに、ジーン・ケリーが出てくる。下手な訳をすると、

ベッドの縁に座って、新聞の見出しを眺めていた。
「可哀想なジーン・ケリー。もう雨に唱えばを唱えないんだ」と彼は言うの。
俺のヒーロー達を連れて行くことができるんだろう。
どうして俺の痛みを持っていってくれないんだ？

という感じだろうか・・・。

この曲はバラードで、とても美しい曲である。しかし、それを歌っているのは、ドリーム．・シアターという超絶技巧のオンパレードで売っているバンドの曲である。このバンドをヘヴィー・メタルというカテゴリーの中に単純に入れてしまうのは難しいが、それでも、ヘヴィーなロックをやっている連中であることには変りはない。

その彼らが、ずっと昔の映画を取り上げて、さりげなくジーン・ケリーが出てくるのだ。上でも書いたが、この映画は実に素敵な。世界中でたくさんの人が観たことだろう。アメリカから遠い東洋の日本でも、自分の産まれる前の映画だけれど、わたくしも大好きな映画だ。それくらいビッグな映画である。それくらい影響力の大きい映画だとしても、ジーン・ケリーは自分が亡くなった後に、「ヘヴィー・メタル」の連中が自分のことを歌詞の中に使うなんて予想しただろうか？そう考えると、とても素敵な残り方だと思う。映画を作った人間にとっては実に名誉なことだと思う。

もちろん、映画、そしてそこで使われた曲が素晴らしかったからこそ、こういうことになると思うのだが、自分が亡くなった後も、映画そのものだけでなく、存在そのもの、そして映画、曲名が、さりげなく歌詞の中に残されてゆくというのは、とても素敵なことだと思う。

素晴らしいものは「普遍」であるということを示している気がするのだ。誰が聴いても、素晴らしいものは素晴らしい。

この曲だが、上で紹介した「Falling into Infinity」よりも、個人的には、「Once In A Lifetime」に収録されているライブ・ヴァージョンが好きだ。ここではサックスが参加していて、とても素晴らしい。
